One of my favorite record labels have created a laptop decal which works especially great on Macbooks. When applying the decal however, great care needs to be taken. Basically, if you mess it up, you don’t get a second chance (well, maybe you do). So if you’re more the clumsy type and ordering internationally, you might want to buy two sets from the start.
With this being said, if you know what to watch out for, it’s actually not that hard getting it right the first time. If you’re unsure how to get it done, see my little how-to below. I’m not saying this is the smartest way to get it done, but it worked great for me.
Step 1: Remove the protective cover of the decal so that the sticky surface is exposed. Be careful not to touch it. Then place it on the laptop with the non-sticky side downwards. Adjust the position of the decal so that the actual artwork completely covers the logo. Now mark the edges with something that stays firmly in place. I used regular household grade plastic tape, which is certainly not the best solution, but it did the job.
Step 2: Carefully apply the decal by gradually lowering it on the surface while applying gentle pressure. If you mess it up there will be air bubbles.
Step 3: Remove the tape with the help of a tissue (using your uncovered finger nails might leave scratches on the surface) and remove the glue rests with a mild cleaning fluid.
Step 4: Enjoy!

Habe gerade von von meiner Schwester erfahren, dass meine bald neunjährige Nichte im Zuge der Anschaffung ihres Thinkpads nun einen Computerkurs an der örtlichen Volkshochschule besucht. Ich war schwer beeindruckt und mußte an meine eigene Kindheit denken. Bei mir lief das damals irgendwie noch ganz anders. Als ich in ihrem Alter war und Interesse an der Benutzung des Familien-PCs zeigte da kam ein Arbeitskollege von meinem Vater vorbei und hat mir kurz die Befehle zum Wechseln des Verzeichnisses und Auflisten des Verzeichnisinhalts gezeigt und erklärt was eine ausführbare Datei ist und mir dann die fünfhundertseitige 1989er-Auflage von Van Wolvertons “Running MS-DOS” in die Hand gedrückt: “Hier, da steht der Rest drin.”

Ein Tropfen auf den heißen Stein, aber zumindest bekommt das Thema dadurch mehr Aufmerksamkeit, das sehe ich eigentlich als Primärnutzen der meisten Petitionen.

Das sind die wahren Helden unserer Gesellschaft! Leider steht auf deren Seite nirgendwo wie man ihnen Geld- und Sachspenden zukommen lassen kann. Gerade in Anbetracht des Spon-Artikels ist das schon sehr bedauerlich. Da wären sicherlich einige tausend Euro an Spenden zusammen gekommen. Ich habe mal eine Anfrage verschickt wie es diesbezüglich aussieht.

Momentan werkeln im Macbook zwei Kerne vor sich hin. Wer sie beide ausnutzt kommt theoretisch auf 100% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs. In der Praxis frisst die Verwaltung der Parallelisierung natürlich einen Teil auf und es bleiben vielleicht noch etwa 50% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs übrig. Das ist für den Anfang schonmal ganz nett, aber deutlich interessanter wird es wenn man in Richtung zweistellige oder dreistellige Kernzahlen guckt. Im CPU-Bereich etwa hat Intel bereits vor drei Jahren einen Forschungsprozessor mit 80 physischen Kernen vorgestellt. Frei erhältlich ist derzeit beispielsweise von Sun ein Server mit immerhin schon 32 physischen Kernen. Im GPU-Bereich wiederum gibt es von Nvidia eine Grafikkarte mit sagenhaften 960 Kernen. In Anbetracht dieser Zahlen dürfte jedem die schnell wachsende Bedeutung der Parallelen Programmierung klar werden.
